Own a piece of Grateful Dead history! Original 16mm film entitled I Want to be a Camper. This is the earliest known paid soundtrack done by Jerry Garcia. While I dont know the exact date, it could very well be one of the earliest recordings of Jerry ever.

The film was produced by a Stanford University student who was working on their Masters of Arts in Communication degree. The story goes that after filming an educational documentary at a summer camp for diabetic children in Kings Canyon National Park, a friend of the filmmaker suggested Jerry Garcia (this was prior to the formation of the Grateful Dead) for the job of recording acoustic guitar music for the soundtrack.

Grateful Dead scholar Mary Eisenhart said that the filmmaker noted: I doubt if we had to do any re-takes, as I remember him getting the feeling I wanted very easily. I also remember being impressed with how much hair he had!

In the book Garcia: An American Life, by Blair Jackson, on page 61, Jackson writes Jerry also performed the soundtrack for a movie that one of the graduate students made about a camp for diabetic children. Jerrys first wife Sara adds, Thats a treasure probably nobody even knows about. Well now you know about it and YOU could be the owner of this rare treasure! I watched the film one time and I can say that it is in great condition.

The image is very well preserved. Some slight wear in the first minute (a tiny wobble) or so, then flawless. Beautiful Kodak low-fade print with no signs of fading. The soundtrack quality (most importantly) is also superb throughout without signs of wear. The total length of Garcias easily recognizable guitar picking is roughly 5-10 minutes. The songs Jerry plays are in the traditional folk vein but his distinctive style is evident even then. The closing credits read Guitar by Jerry Garcia. To my knowledge, screening this film on 16mm reel is the only way to hear these pre-Dead recordings of Garcias solo acoustic guitar playing.

As far as I can find, neither the soundtrack nor film have been released in any format and arent available anywhere else. Youll be opening a time capsule when you hold this 16mm original reel in your hands. No rights are implied in the sale.
