VINTAGE 1974 Gibson SG Standard SE withTarback Super Humbuckers RARE Survivor

SG Standard SE w/Tarback Super Humbuckers RARE Survivor. Here we have a decent walnut colored 1974 Gibson SG Standard with a pair of Super Humbucking pickups sometimes called Tarbacks or Blackbacks. These EXTREMELY RARE pickups were original to this special edition SG.

Tarbacks were wound hotter than the standard Gibson T-top pickups and potted in black epoxy to reduce noise. There were other non-typical Special Edition appointments with this beautiful old guitar including Ebony fingerboard, rectangular Mother-of-Pearl inlays and chrome/nickel plate tuning machines. Im pretty sure the body is mahogany. This guitar came from an estate, and Im familiar with its history. Before we get into that, the guitar sounds and plays tremendously with all the care and time weve put into it. This SG can actually be taken out and gigged with in the condition it is in. It sounds really nice those Tarback humbuckers make a HUGE difference in the way this SG sounds compared to others. It also plays real nice too, with low action and clean, leveled frets. This guitar is a treasure for a lucky guitarist or collector! This is a players guitar which has a moderate amount of visible wear, flaws, scratches, dents, oxidation. And/or other blemishes, but overall, the finish is in pretty good condition.

We will say this guitar is moderately reliced the natural way. Besides the nut, this SG is completely original, from my recollection. Its owner became disabled then later passed on.

It was a one-owner guitar before it came to me. As an aside, the original owner was a heavy smoker, so this guitar may still have some lingering nicotine smell. About 25 years ago, the guitar fell from the owners strap and crashed to the floor. This created a 2.5 staggered crack in the neck south of the headstock on the top side of the neck (NOTE: this was not the typical Gibson smile complete break of the headstock).

A staggered hairline crack appeared in the neck (obviously not all the way through), and a finish stress-crack formed on the top side of the neck pocket (these things are pictured). A luthier professionally repaired the neck crack some 25 years ago when he worked with Gibson.

He is a retired Gibson mandolin and guitar builder who is extremely exacting and precise, and also a talented Bluegrass musician. The SG has been stable ever since. The stress crack at the neck pocket is still there but poses no problem to overall stability. Its similar to finish stress cracks seen on Strats at the neck pocket. I would consider it superficial, because it can be refinished away, but the cost and time is disproportionate to benefits other than cosmetic. These are the most significant flaws. When the original owner became disabled, he tried to reverse the setup to lefty, in hopes that he could play lefty which rendered the original nut useless. The replacement bone nut came from a 1964 Epiphone Coronet. I was lucky to find such an exacting fit. After this, it had a handful of smaller issues. I leveled, crowned, and polished the frets (this was the first time for this guitar), which took care of lower fret buzz and greatly improved the action. I cleaned and lubed the bridge which now is completely functional and works well, but it does still show some oxidation. There are three smaller issues I havent fixedI may in the futurebut for now, the price is adjusted accordingly.

One of the pickguard screws is stripped out. The original case is a basket case... I wouldnt trust it to safely protect or safely store this guitar long-term. None of these (3) flaws affects the sound or playability. So here is your chance to own a piece of Gibson history.
