To be fair I have not confirmed this with anyone from Specialized, but nevertheless, this story is becoming very interesting. Note: Suntour beat Shimano in introducing a Mountain Bike group by a few months in mid 1982, making its way into some 1983 year model year bikes. While the regular 1984 Stumpjumper still used Suntour components that year. The 84 Super Carrera came with the new Deer Head XT components in Black and the first super plate rear derailleur, dark anodized chainrings, as well as the cult Shimano DX pedals. Specialized also introduced on it some of their best 1980s components such as the Slingshot stem (only year and model standard in black), the Saturae HX28 Hard Anodized rims (in a bronze color), the superb ST cranks, and the excellent Tri-Cross tires.
Besides a different color, the "SC" also had a different lug-work than the regular Stumpjumper, a particular detail of it is that the lug-work around the water bottle braze-ons resemble the Tri-cross tire knob pattern (see pic). The frame was build in the factory that would later make the pink 1985 Stumpjumper Team and the 1986 Allez (based on my research but also on the particular serial number of these bikes).
