Super Rare 1981 10.55oz HOMESTAKE MINING COMPANY Silver Bar Ingot. This bar (Serial Number 10317) was produced in 1981 with a low mintage of less than 1500. The Homestake Mining Company took its name from its famous mine located in South Dakota, and was one of the worlds most prolific and longest operating gold mines, producing an estimated 39.8 million troy ounces of gold and 9 million troy ounces of silver during its 123 years of operation, from 1878 to 2001. Shares were traded on NYSE from 1879 until the company was delisted after being acquired by Canadian gold producer Barrick Gold Corporation in 2002. Homestake Mining Company produced bullion ingots for retail sale only for a very short span, as noted below, and is one of very few refiners who dated their ingots along with a serial number.
