Super Rare! Vintage Frederick Remington Pewter Chess Set, Time-life Issue 1989
FREDERICK REMINGTON PEWTER CHESS SET, TIME-LIFE ISSUE 1989. Vintage Frederic Remington "The Remington Old West Chess Set". THIS SET DOES COME WITH THE CHESS BOARD BUT I DON'T KNOW IF IT IS THE ORIGINAL BOARD THAT CAME WITH THE SET. THE BOARD HAS A LOT OF WEAR AND HAS SOME CHIPS AND SCRATCHES ON IT. THE CLEAR SHELLAC COATING HAS COATING ON THE SURFACE HAS CRACKS IN IT. THE GREEN FELT BACKING ON THE BOTTOM OF THE BOARD ALSO HAS SOME WEAR ALL DUE TO THE AGE OF THE CHESS SET. (PLEASE SEE ALL PHOTOS AND SOOM IN ON ANY SPOTS TO GET A BETTER LOOK AT EVERYTHING).
THE CHESS BOARD MEASURES 23.5 INCHES BY 23.5 INCHES SQUARE AND THE PLAYING SQUARES MEASURE 2.25 INCHES BY 2.25 INCHES SQUARE. These sets are super rare and are rarely offered for sale due to becoming quite collectible. This vintage Frederic Remington chess set was issued in 1989 by The Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art together with Time-Life Classics. Frederic Remington showed us the tough rugged frontier world art at the close of a great chapter in history.
Capturing its virile sprit he established himself as the greatest artist of the Old West. His genius gave us images of frontier life that will live forever. Remington's art is the basis of a definitive American classic "The Remington Old West Chess Set".
From the "Bronco Buster" king to the "Medicine Man" bishop each perfectly fits its role on the chess board. Together they comprise not only a superb chess set but also a personal collection of a magnificent recreated western art. Each chessman is a superbly detailed rendition of the magnificent art of Frederic Remington. They are hand crafted and finished with solid pewter.One side displays cowboys (in a dark patina), and on the other Indians (light pewter). They vary in height from 2" to 3". The Bottom of chess pieces are marked "TIMELIFE" 1989 The Old West Chess Set. One of the Indian rifle is bent (See Pictures) The Thomas Gilcrease Institute of American History and Art, known as Gilcrease Museum, houses a comprehensive collection of the art, culture and history of North America.
Thomas Gilcrease, a citizen of the Muscogee Creek Nation, established Gilcrease Museum in 1949 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This will be a great gift for any Remington fans or chess fans. CHESS PIECES, AND WOODEN DISPLAY BOX ALL HAVE SOME WEAR AND MAY HAVE SOME SMALL SCRATCHES DUE TO AGE. ALL CHESS PIECES ARE IN GREAT CONDITION WITH VERY LITTLE WEAR.
